Sri Lanka is a lower-middle income developing nation with a gross domestic product of about $25.8 billion. This translates into a per capita income of $1,355. It is a country that has suffered ethnic violence and civil war for the past twenty years.
As the world knows, the Asian tsunami killed 48,000 children and adults in Sri Lanka alone. There was mass destruction of homes, towns, schools and most buildings on the coast.
Assist International sent containers of toys, children's clothing and shoes to the victims of the Asian tsunami. Within a couple of months, four water purification systems designed by General Electric were placed in three villages and a AED (Asiana Education Development) run village for the orphaned children of Sri Lanka. These systems are providing purified water for up to 20,000 people a day.

In partnership with Rotary clubs, Assist funded the installation of neo natal and pediatric full perimeter cardiac care monitors in the Lady Ridgeway children's hospital.
A team of biomedical engineers and cardiology teachers from Salinas Valley Memorial Health Care Systems worked with Assist International at the General Hospital of Ratnapura to install a 6 bed critical care/intensive care monitoring system with central station, a 5 bed step down unit, an ultrasound and all the consumables needed for this life saving equipment at the General Hospital. This regional hospital serves more than 2 million people. Before this project, only one cardiologist served at Ratnapura. As a result of this partnership, there are now ten cardiologist and 50 nurses running the CCU 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
